Introduction

Friends have suggested I make some of my watercolour paintings available for others to see, so above are links by subject, to a representative gallery of my work that I hope you will enjoy.

I have no ambition to launch a commercial enterprise, although I have given and sold pictures to friends, and also painted specific pictures for them, mainly of their houses.

Full Name - Norman Edwin Booth
I am a widower with one married daughter
I was a Contract Engineer in the Water Industry before I retired at 65 in January 2007.
I have been painting since 1997 (and my arm is aching!)
My interests include Family History, Motor Racing (Historic), and Walking.

Painting Demonstration

The link above leads to a series of seven pictures, showing how I create a painting in stages from first sketch to the finished painting, with explanatory notes under each picture.

The painting is of part of the ruins of Furness Abbey.

As I do not have any formal art training I don't presume to teach anyone how to go about painting, or about technique, merely to illustrate how I approach my own painting. Anyone starting painting needs to develop their own style, and not copy others. This tends to happen naturally the more paintings you do.

I learned whatever technique I have from books, then by applying what I had read, making mistakes, and learning from the experience.

Some paintings are mainly washes with little fine detail. On these the overall atmosphere is the main feature. Other paintings have plenty of fine detail like the buildings, where I really enjoy trying to capture the texture of bricks, the patina and moss on stone, and the affect of light and shade on the different surfaces.

I hope the example I have chosen illustrates most techniques.
